Steve Heitzeg - Ecoscores
Ecoscore Peace Flags

Program notes

Inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags, Steve Heitzeg has created these Ecoscore Peace Flags in honor of music, nature and peace. Heitzeg composed five ecoscores which were silk- screened onto cotton squares, each on its own colored square. Each peace flag consists of these five ecoscores (each 5-inch x 7-inch squares) and a witness square attached to a cotton cord. These ecoscore peace flags were then gently placed in trees.

The composer states: “I have composed these ecoscores in celebration of the music and beauty of the earth and as a plea for peace. The ecoscores are placed in the trees as organic metaphors for our being part of, not apart from, nature. They are meant to be a kind of serene reminder of our need to respect all the diverse voices and species on the earth. In musical terms, a flag is a hook on the stem of a note that determines the action and durational value of the note. So too, these flags will hopefully serve as a kind of musical/political action that will reawaken our human need for compassion and peace.”
