Steve Heitzeg - Ecoscores
Peace March
for Paul and Sheila Wellstone

Program Notes

The score for Peace March is in the shape of a peace sign and calls for the English horn to be seated in the center of the stage in the lotus position, as in a non-violent sit-in.

Throughout the piece the players are instructed to say such words and phrases as: peace and justice, human rights, economic justice, nonviolence, no war.

Heitzeg states: “Paul and Sheila Wellstone stood up and fought for peace, justice and the rights of all. I wanted to honor their lives and their legacy of working for social justice and for the voiceless in America by composing a work that cries for peace and justice in its anti-war overtones.”

Additional materials
  • “Paul was so outspoken and just loved people and wanted to make life better for people. Not only Americans, but all -- think all -- of the world, and it's just great to be a part of that voice.” -- Steve Heitzeg (Quoted in the Minnesota Public Radio story Memorials keep Paul Wellstone's memory alive by Mark Zdechlik, October 23, 2003)
